Montaione

Montaione, which origin goes back to the Etruscan-Romans, it's today a little town. Some archaeological sites of necropolis and furnaces exist in the surroundings areas of Poggio all'Aglione, Bellafonte, Iano and Castelfanfi.
After the barbaric invasions, some stronger constructions were rebuilt on the previous ruins, such as the castle with its firm towers and walls.
In the past the area was under the jurisdiction of the Longobardo Allone from Lucca, after whom the castle took the name of Mons Allonis, changed in Montaione, as read in a document of 988. Made a municipality in 1257 it got involved in the war between San Gimignano, Volterra and San Miniato, was submitted to Florence authority in 1369.
